Buffer Pool Tuning
Abstract:
John will discuss both local and group buffer pool tuning.
For local buffer pool the following subtopics will be discussed:
- Introductory comments
- Common problems
- Use multiple buffer pools
- Buffer pool metrics for read efficiency
- Page classification and LRU processing
- Buffer pool simulation, use of long-term page fixed buffers, Use of large size real memory frames, Contiguous buffer pool.
For group buffer pool the following subtopics will be discussed:
- Common problems
- Best practice for CFRM Policy settings
- Rough calculation of required number of directory entries and changed pages
Speaker Bio:
John is an IBM Alumni, retired IBM Distinguished Engineer, now working as a senior consultant for Triton Consulting. He has worked with Db2 for z/OS for over 40 years and has extensive experience of Db2 in terms of systems, database and application design. He specialises in design for high performance, continuous availability, restart/recovery and data sharing. He is one of foremost authorities in the industry for implementing high end transaction processing database applications. He is an IDUG Hall of Fame Speaker having been voted best speaker at several IDUG conferences. John was recognised in 2022 by IDUG for his leadership, loyalty and distinguished service to the global DB2 community.

Abstract:
Buffer Pool Tuning – The Next Generation, will review the method and possibilities of Bufferpool and Group Bufferpool tuning that now exist in a modern world.
It will take the attendees through an explanation of what is a Bufferpool and the BP tuning process from gathering data to actioning recommendations and comparing results as well as showing how you can easily and simply manage all of these complex beasts using state-of-the-art rules and Zowe graphics to enable a truly modern experience.
Speaker Bio:
Roy Boxwell has more than 37 years of experience in MVS, OS/390, and z/OS environments – 36 of those in Db2. He specializes in installation, migration, and performance monitoring and tuning. Roy leads the SEG development team of SEGUS responsible for the real-time database maintenance solutions. He is also an active participant, speaker and contributor on the IDUG Db2 Listserv and sends out two monthly blogs the Db2 z/OS Newsletter and the Db2 z/OS APAR Update. Roy is an IBM Champion since 2022.
