Must have Zowe Apps – The Future of Db2 for z/OS Administration with IBM Db2 Admin Foundation
Abstract:
Zowe is the basis for modern IBM Z tooling. There are already many apps available to do different tasks, including Db2 for z/OS. For decades, IBM Data Studio provided free-of-charge basic Db2 for z/OS administration and query tuning capabilities that were used by many customers. With the End of Service (EOS) in March 2025, Db2 for z/OS administrators should make themself familiar with the Db2 Administration Foundation based on Zowe and the SQL Tuning Services now, to have access to modern Db2 for z/OS administration functions in the future. In this session, Benedict will explain how the future Db2 for z/OS administration tools landscape looks like and what components are required to get a certain capability.
Speaker Bio:
Benedict Holste works as a Technical Specialist for Data & AI solutions on IBM Z and as an IBM Z Architect at IBM Germany. He has 10 years of experience with the IBM Z platform with a focus on Db2 for z/OS, Db2 tools, and surrounding solutions. Benedict is the IBM representative of the German Db2 for z/OS GSE user group and co-organizer of the user group meetings. He is a regular speaker at those meetings and other Db2 for z/OS events and conferences.

Abstract:
ZOWE was announced at SHARE 2018 in St. Louis. Executives from IBM, Broadcom, Rocket Software and the Open Mainframe Project from the Linux Foundation spoke of their desire to make Db2 more readily-available to users of all skill levels.
ZOWE, the first open-source framework for z/OS, is poised to break new ground for IBM z clients. This also marked the start of transformation of Db2 for z/OS Tools. In September 2023 ZOWE celebrated it’s fith aniversary and old tools like Data Studio are now announced End Of Service.
ZOWE provides features and functions for all different types and experience levels of users, database- and application administrators. We are excited about the opportunities and capabilities this new face of the mainframe opened up. As a day one supporter and extender of the ZOWE framework, we’ve transformed the ISPF and Eclipse UI of our Space AssuranceExpert for Db2 z/OS (SAX), SQL WorkloadExpert for Db2 z/OS (WLX) and WLX Audit for Db2 z/OS. All our Apps come as a zero-Client installation, with a browser-based graphical interface, leveraging Zowe™ virtual desktop. This presentation introduces SEGs ZOWE suite – THE must have ZOWE Apps for Db2 zOS.
Speaker Bios:
Ulf Heinrich specialized in Db2 recovery and operations, managing cost reduction and 24×7 operations. As a consultant at large customer sites, he has implemented database maintenance procedures and recovery strategies, and also experienced the pitfalls of recovery scenarios under real-world recovery pressure. Ulf contributes to the ZOWE community since day one and helps customers implementing, customizing and managing modern zOS/USS solutions. His activities cover EMEA, as well as North America through SE’s U.S. subsidiary, SEGUS Inc. As a member of SE’s Request Board, he’s working closely with customers and the development labs. As a member of the TRIDEX.org Board of Directors he’s proud to support the Db2 community in the greater NY area.
